Accomodation

 

Strathspey mountain hostel, Main Street, Newtonmore (Tel: 01540 673694)
This is self-catering accommodation. Bar meals are obtainable in pubs nearby.

Friday 29th January

 

Departing from Stirling railway station at 18.30 hrs. Drive to Newtonmore via Perth, stopping at Ballinluig for supper or a snack. Your Winter skills instructor is Richard Kermode. Please see below for the skills he is going to teach you.

  • How to hold an ice axe properly
  • Step cutting
  • Ascending and descending steep snow faces
  • Crossing steep snow faces
  • Self-arrest
  • Avalanche awareness and avoidance through snow pit analysis
  • Creating an emergency shelter
  • Cramponing on ice

Extras:
Ascending and descending using snow belays! We will create a gully climbing scenario on steep slopes utilising the skills you have gained.

Saturday 30th January

 

There are some step in crampons, helmets and harness available on a first booked basis. We will be at the door of the hire shop in Aviemore at 9am for winter boots should you not have them. Onward then to Cairngorm for the day.

Sunday 31st January

 

We will use the slopes of some of the Cairngorm corries to 'fine up' the skills learnt yesterday.

Total Cost of £140 - SC Accommodation, Transport, and Guided Tuition

A non-returnable deposit of £40 is required to confirm booking.
The balance of £100 to be paid by 15th January.
Please make all cheques payable to Janet Whyte and enclose a s.a.e. if a receipt is required.

This deposit is lodged in a Clients Deposit Account with the Bank of Scotland in Callander.
In the event of this trip being cancelled by Glen and Mountain Guides the deposit will be automatically refunded.
